So many things are happening right now. I wish you could be in my head. There is too much to type. Last nights show was phenomenal. Thank you to everyone for making me feel like a real boy.

The new record has sold more copies in five days then ghost party sold in two years. Stop, yes you read that right.

On a sad note. I am considering retiring this blog. After six years on here, I am Thinking about moving everything to just dot com, Facebook, and twitter.

Tonight is hopefully the end of the record. Cutting it close.
My buddy James was in today to lend some bgvs on the song, "dogs".
And then it was all said and done but I wasnt quite feeling good about the song, "knots". So I did something rad. I cut Back a ton of instruments in the mix right down to bass and drums and then recorded a live off the floor take of vocals and acoustic at the se time and i got lucky that it was a good enough take. No mistakes. Love it. I've ended up stripping down this record so much to just the bones of drums, vocals and acoustic. With a few other elements now and again. And I really love that I've got it Back to acoustic basics cause the whole album was written this summer in such a stripped simple fashion.

Had a great coffee with old mate Eric F and new mate Matt B. Matt was recording a verse he wrote for the song, "A Bird on the Ground". It is a rap. Yes, shocking, I will wait for you to relax a bit. However, this rap is recorded in a great way, and not too rappy... more poetryesque. It is a great verse. An incredible couple of lines. Anyway, we were at Starbucks today and recorded the piece. Lots of room noise and background stuff happening. Totally cool.
Works great in the mix.

Record is done in a few days. Waiting on one dude to help with some violinin'

Just a few finishing touches this week and should be done mixing this weekend.

A lot of the finishing touches I have been doing is just going back over the mixes and reducing the clutter and trying to bring it back to just the simple acoustic, drums and vocals that it started off as.

I officially hate this record.
I've meddled with it too much.
I think I'm just overdone with music this week.
I produced and mixed an ep for bruekke. Did a demo with the good hunters, mixed and mastered another single and worked on my record as well. Im exhausted and annoyed.
I just went to mix and got frustrated by everything I heard.
I'm tired and need a break from it all.
Having said that. I want to go back and mix the songs to more represent the purity in the demos and writing stages of the summer. I miss those.
I don't want to hate this record.

Sessions have been a lot of fun.

I hope to have all initial tracking done by this weekend. That is a great feeling.
I am having lots of people come in and do some background vocals. This record has a lot of group vocals. All my friends on this beautiful Other Songs Music label...

Last night I had The Good Hunters (photo) in to sing a ending chorus on the song, "The Found". They did a great job. Bruekke was also here a few weeks ago to sing all the choruses on "Flesh and Bones". Nat Wiarda was here before Cmas to sing on "Nobody's Someone". On Wednesday my buddies Tim, Eric and Jeff are here to record on "Knots" and of course the incredible Brielle sang some great stuff back in November on "Between the Mountains and the Sea". And of course James Hoffman has done some work on "The Found" and hope to get him back on another tune.

Lots of exciting news happening now in 2011. Artwork released soon.

It's four am and I can't sleep. So I went into the studio and worked on the songs we've recorded with a new band called Bruekke. It is a very swampy, loose, folk rock sound. Great band. I'm working on a record for them and the three song ep should be our on Other Songs this January.

While they were Here on Saturday I had them record some bgvs on "flesh and bones". I just mixed it tonight and I love it. I love the sound of the group vocals and they came up with great harmonies on the fly.

Lots of things happening. I've started to produce a short ep for the new band on the Other Songs label, "Bruekke".

And I was suppose to start work on another new artist James Hoffman last week, but I got sick. So we start this weekend.

I've had some quick time to work on my record. This weekend I've got a ton of mates coming in to do some group vocals and I just wrote a cool vocal part for the song, "Nobodys someone" for the bridge.

So many great music things happening. 2011 is setting up to be a knock out year for Other Songs music co.

im sitting in the living room listening to the first burn CD of the full album... mixes still rough and unfinished, but im getting a feel for the album.

and while I like everything and the songs are very close to me, im just fearing that it doesn't sound much different from Ghost Party. Which isn't a bad thing. But I just want to make sure Im always showing growth. I think the songs really show growth in the writing, lyrics and music. But the production is sounds awfully close to Ghost Party production... which I'm hesitant about...

Going to keep working... lots of time to perfect.

I've been working on the song "flesh and bones" since Friday. After a long while of working on the version I recorded with the album, I ended up scraping it all for a new version. So on Sunday I tracked a new rythmn, some new melodies and added a bridge. And now I'm happy with it. Still not in love with it. But I like the feel of it.

Sorry it's been so long. I've been super busy.
Kids With Money have their first gig on Thursday and we've been practicing like a lot.

Ive also begun preproduction with two other acts on the label that I'm recording.

Here is an update on the record.

- last week I had Brielle come over for some background vocals and violin. She did a stand up job. She just recorded for "between the mountains and the sea" It sounds really great. It's the last tune on the record i think. I just got to mixing it tonight and some incredible elements came out. I haven't mixed the violins yet but I mixed the vocals with four takes on top of eachother.

- I've also made huge progress on mixing "knots" and am close to finishing that one.

- I started mixing "dreaming in red" and I ended up rerecording it twice. And then I realized quick that it just wasn't going anywhere and maybe I shouldn't include it on the record. (b side for sure). Which is all good cause I have another tune that is more fitting waiting in the wings that I will record. It's called "where I lived" or "Spes mea". Unsure.

Lots of other great stuff happening. Kids with Money is going to begin work on our first ep in the winter. Right around the time that my new record will come out. And then hopefully a Kids ep will be done by spring.

After a nice 24hrs of scottless rest, I reopened, "wild dogs" and took a listen and I was giddy with the sound.

All of these tunes have a consistent sound to them and it really sounds like a record.

I'm so glad to be (sorta) finished.

Did some touch up vocals tonight for three tunes on a great mic I borrowed from my buddy jeff and it goes back tomorrow.

Electra was the word my iPhone chose to use instead of "wowzers" and I thought it was fitting.

This morning I finished "dreaming in red" and "mountains" and then I started the last track called "who loves you" and just before I got into it I accidentally wrote a new tune. I knew this would happen. So I worked for a few hours and finished that one and now I'm back on "who loves you" which is going well.

Very productive day today
But I am tired ad sick of this. Sorta. It's getting draining. But I'm happy to have so much accomplished.

Today I did "j Merrick" (tentative title), "flesh and bones" and "wild dogs". Some great sounds and overall pretty happy.

Would like to do some more touch up tracking and prep for tomorrow before the day is out.
And then mix late into the evening again.

Tomorrow is the last day.

Started today with a 5k race. It was fun. And nice day and a medal around the neck.

So then back to the studio. Had more computer problems but was able to work with it and completed a song called "a bird on the ground". Then hit some major computer problems again. This time I was really pissed. Wasting serious time.

I am happy to say and pretty confident that i solved the problem. It was a frequency setting for each recording session. So by six pm I was starting work on "knots". Great results and I found a good "sound" for the record.

As long as everything keeps running smoothly, I will have a very productive day tomorrow.

Feeling good now.

Going to rest and then mix until midnight.

Today was tough
At first it was hard to get going. I needed a coffee. By 9:30 I was rolling. Belly of the whale went really well with a super cool jam ending. Very stoked about that. A lot happier sounding than the demo version I did in January.

Then I started Nobodys someone. All the vocals and a few of the main acoustic takes are going to need redoing this week or another time. They are sounding hissy. Got a stellar drum take on this tune. Then built it up kinda nice and simple.

Then my friend ben and his pal came over for a bit. Then I started Flesh and bones. Which was poised to sound rad when all of a sudden something in the recordings sounded off. Very mid rangey. Four hours later I narrowed down the problem to be the software. How bizarre. I was freaking out. I reinstalled the software by 9pm and it seems to be working okay. I was freaking. The tests sound good. I'm going to use that as a chance to start over on flesh and bones.

I'm tired.

Tomorrow at 7am I'm off to run in a 5k race with me mate Sven and some family. Then back by 11ish hopefully for more work.

Tomorrow I'm going to try something new by recording the guitars on my MacBook and then tossing them over to the main computer. That way I can get a cleaner signal on the guitars.

last night i took the time to finalize the keys and tempos for all the new tunes, that just eliminates a stage during the recording process... to be all ready for it...

today i sold our dining room table and chairs, which is unrelated to the recording weekend, but means that cleaning out the living room/dining room becomes much easier.

on a seperate note, the label developements have been occuring in a very strange manner. things are falling into place as if they have always meant to be there... people are contacting me out of the blue about different services and opportunities... i am really excited to what is going to happen in 2011 with Other Songs Music.

i've been really busy lately. lots going on in the music world. band practice, song edits, studio hardware testing/repairs.

also some big developments with the label, adding KIDS WITH MONEY and BRUEKKE to the fray, as well as a few meetings this week with two new artists. So that has kept me swamped.

Although the songs are ready and im excited to record, it still came as a shock that the recording weekend is just a week away. That has got me thrilled. I can't wait to get working. But there is a lot that has to get done. I have to schedule some musicians/singers to drop by, I have to rent LOTS of equipment, borrow lots of stuff, schedule the songs, finish the songs, test the gear, set up the studio, plan the songs (tempo, key, arrangement).

Hey followers,

I'm feeling really great right now. This fall is going to be a buffet of music for me and I'm bloody loving it.

I just had a band practice and it's feeling really good.
The band is called KIDS WITH MONEY.
It's jeff, steve and myself. Jeff plays banjo and guitars and organ and steve plays drums.
We've had some great sessions thus far.
This will be a separate project from my solo stuff and were getting some gigs already lined up for the fall. A short ep is due soon.

Some crazy things has also been happening with Other songs music co. We have signed a new band called Bruekke as well as kids with money. And im meeting with another band this wk as well.
The label has transformed from just an idea into the real deal. And some legitiment things are really happening and I couldn't be happier.

Also there's that thing of the recording session this oct for a new Scott Orr full length.

Had my first band practice last night with Steve and jeff. Really good start for our first go of it. Playing all the new tunes that I've been working on and a few from ghost party.

It's been fun so far and we are at it again next monday. Hopefully try to grab a vid or pic next time. It's been a real lesson in perseverance and the value of practice. I really wanna stick with this. Hopefully do some shows this fall.

Also wrote another song tonight. Called "knots". This song accidentally became somewhat of a 9/11 song.

since the start of september, writing hasn't come as easy as it miraculously did in august. august was gold.
but that won't bring me down.
i have a good stack of songs to take into the studio this october.
i have also been demoing a bunch of songs on this little set up here (see photo) and im pretty confident with the 5 or 6 songs I have ready to record.
hopefully more songs will come before the big october weekend,

i have a band practice tomorrow night with a new group of guys im playing with, really looking forward to it.

a lot of exciting things are in the works;

- i've been demoing all the new songs on my laptop (see yesterday's post) and it has allowed me to start thinking about the production of each song
- there's a new facebook page for mr. orr: look it up
- last night I worked on a new scottorrmusic web page, the existing one is down for a few more days
- the demos of all the new songs has got me more excited for this record than any music project I've ever been a part of.
- i have a band practice this wednesday with a new band i have put together, a trio, an old friend and a new friend, and then myself, whom i have known for quite some time. this should be hot!

broken record

I'm starting to sound like a broken mp3 (modernized analogy) but I really think this record is special.

My usual record process is to write for 1.5 years and then record for a year or less than release.

This new album has just been flowing out of my mouth at a rapid rate. Tonight is a fine example. I just wrote a melody, chorus and all the lyrics to a new song in about 3 mins. I literally just sang out three consecutive verses. And they are significantly meaningful words.
I'm really beside myself here with this writing process. I really hope that I can make the tracking session go as well as the writing season has.

Another new song done tonight. It's actually the theme of a song I wrote two weeks ago but re tried as a new melody and such. Called, "a bird on the ground" 2.0.

Over the weened I spent some time just polishing the other tunes. Getting them all studio ready.

I have six weeks to finish writing.

But tonight I'm going to just do some reading.

This new album has borrowed a lot from authors and their works. I stole some direct lines from people like Marcus Aurelius, Henry Thoreau, Moses, the elephant man, among others.

A very pretentious album indeed.

This new album smokes American spirits and wears wide frames.

There has been like a song written every other day and they are decently strong tunes too.

The newest called "nobody's someone" and it's my favorite of the album so far.

when i go into the studio this october, i plan on having at least two cover tunes to record as possible inclusion on the record or at least bonus tracks.

the two covers that i have planning on right now are "north" from pe-ro (the band I produced last year) and "brave man's death" by J Roddy Walston & the Business. The latter will be a big production deal with some group vocals and will be quite challenging to translate from the big rock sound it has now to something more "orrish".

two more songs were written this past weekend. it was a great session. saturday night and sunday night. two new tunes, one brand new ("a bird on the ground") and one song that was demoed a few months ago, almost a year ago, and was brought into more light tonight ("the one i need").

i'm really stoked with this progress. feeling great with what is coming out, not just the quality, but also the quantity. it's nice to have a high volume batch.

i worked on a new song tonight. i had the idea for a song a day ago, and so I pressed on tonight to make something of it. the song is called, "a bird on the ground" and it is kind of about not living life as well as you should be or not living up to people's expectations or something like that. i don't really know what it's about. it's not my job to come up with the meanings of songs - that's your job.

the lyrics to this song are pretty good, considering the three verses came out rather quickly... the music feels fun and different, but maybe too simple and not trailblazing enough....
i don't know.

really my goal is just to have a bunch of finished songs (lyrics and music) and then let them take shape in the studio as that is where they should really become "songs". Right now they are just music and lyrics that slightly fit together. The emotion and the feeling of a song is birthed in the studio.

on the other hand, that's no excuse to write bland, boring, gut-less songs... and im fearful sometimes that I fall into that. I have to make sure im not just making a song so that Id have something to produce and record.

anyway, im looking forward to this thanksgiving session. hope to have a big batch of songs to record. and it's looking like that will be the case.
